The Irises by Vincent van Gogh have always caught my attention. The question this challenge raised for me was: how did he get the flowers? I read a bit about where he painted them, along with a series of other flower and color studies. At the time, he was at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Its gardens, now a museum, are almost entirely intact, you can still see and feel what he probably saw. That gives the Irises a much deeper meaning for me. I hope you enjoy this exploration of how I imagine he gathered the flowers he went on to paint.
