The Story Behind the Bill Nettles Logo
Back in 2015, I entered a DesignCrowd contest to create a logo for Bill Nettles, Attorney at Law.
For a law firm, I didn't want to take the obvious route.
No courthouse. No scales of justice. No gavel.
Instead, I wanted the name itself to become the identity.
I used a classic serif typeface to give BILL NETTLES a strong, established and professional character. The subtle use of blue on “NETTLES” adds distinction without taking away from the seriousness of the legal brand.
Below it, I added “ATTORNEY AT LAW” with generous letter spacing and thin horizontal lines. This keeps the secondary information elegant and balanced while giving the whole logo a refined, traditional law-firm feel.
The result was simple, professional and built around the person behind the practice.
On December 3, 2015, this design was selected as the winning entry on DesignCrowd.
Prize: $280
What makes this project even more special to me is the person behind the name.
Bill Nettles later served as U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina, after being appointed by President Barack Obama.
At the time, I was simply focused on solving a logo brief.
Looking back years later, it's interesting to realize that one of the identities I created early in my career was for someone who would go on to hold such a significant position in the U.S. legal system.
That's what I love about logo design.
You create a mark for a person or business, hand it over, and then the identity becomes part of their journey.
