Entrap Games: From a $150 Logo to an $8,000–$10,000 Client Relationship
In 2015, I won a $150 logo project for Entrap Games on DesignCrowd.
At the time, it was simply another logo project.
But it became one of the most valuable client relationships of my freelance career.
The Concept Behind the Logo
Because Entrap Games was an escape room entertainment business, I wanted the identity to communicate the idea of being trapped, finding the key, solving the maze, and escaping, without making the logo overly literal or complicated.
The iconmark was built around a maze inspired geometric structure, with the letters “E” and “G” cleverly incorporated into the maze form. At the center, a keyhole represents the ultimate goal of the experience: finding the key and unlocking your way out.
I also integrated a human figure into the “T” of Entrap. The person is holding a key, creating a small visual story within the wordmark:
You are trapped. You find the key. You unlock the room. You escape.
This gave the logo a deeper connection to the actual experience that Entrap Games was selling, while keeping the overall identity clean, memorable and versatile.
The identity was designed to work beyond a screen, across business cards, T shirts, vehicles, websites and future applications.
Daniel selected my design as the winner, and the relationship continued long after the original logo project.
He went on to commission approximately 4 to 5 website projects at around $1,800 each, along with additional logo work, including the Albuquerque Room Escape Game logo and website.
In total, that original $150 logo relationship generated approximately:
$8,000–$10,000 in business
But the biggest lesson wasn't the money.
It was the trust.
A $150 project can become an $8,000–$10,000 relationship when you focus on delivering work that makes the client want to come back.
That's why I don't believe designers should judge a project only by its initial price.
The real value of a project can be the relationship that comes after it.
I didn't just win a logo contest.
I won a client.
