What a WordPress security check actually looks at
Security monitoring is one of those things that feels abstract until something goes wrong. A hacked site, injected spam links, or a defaced homepage are not hypothetical risks for small business websites, they happen regularly, and often to sites that haven't been touched in months because nothing seemed broken.
A proper security check looks at several things. Whether plugins and themes are up to date, because outdated software is the most common entry point for attacks. Whether user accounts have appropriate permissions and whether any unfamiliar accounts have been added. Whether the site is running on a current version of PHP. Whether file permissions are set correctly on the server. Whether there are any signs of malware or injected code already present.
None of this is visible to a visitor. A site can look completely normal while running compromised code in the background, sending spam, redirecting mobile visitors, or quietly collecting form submissions.
The businesses most at risk are the ones that launched a site, handed it off, and assumed it would take care of itself. WordPress is a maintained platform, which means it requires ongoing attention to stay secure. A site that hasn't been updated in six months is a different security posture than one that was checked last week.
This is one of the reasons I include security monitoring as a standard part of the Website Care & Monthly Maintenance. A site that gets checked regularly is a site that doesn't become an emergency.
