Why do you keep going back to the beach when you already know exactly what will happen?
I first asked myself that question 12 years ago.
Last month, I turned it into a spec ad. The process began with countless rewrites, drawing inspiration from the storytelling of Howard Gossage, Bill Bernbach and Wieden+Kennedy.
Then I listened to the script dozens of times in different AI voices, using each one to fine-tune the writing.
Next, I pre-visualised the entire film with just two 15-second Seedance 2.0 generations. The result looked almost nothing like the final ad, but it proved that the idea had enough substance to become one.
Then came the music. Whenever possible, I like to find the soundtrack before creating the final footage because it gives me the visual rhythm of the story. The track you’ll hear was my first choice (but I still spent another two days exploring other options, only to return to it).
Once the voiceover and music were working together, I rebuilt the footage from scratch, loosely following the pre-vis.
I also sent an entire day’s worth of generations to the bin before discovering the fast-paced visual language that finally made the first half work. It gave the beach chaos the immediacy and physical energy it needed.
Twelve years ago, this was an irritated note written on a beach.
I always imagined that bringing it to life would require a big production and a large team. I never imagined I’d create it on my own, sitting in front of a computer, for a brand that doesn’t exist.
What an exciting time to be making things.
Give it a watch and let me know what you think.
