Everyone says, "Learn Webflow."
But very few people tell you what you should learn before opening Webflow.
If I were starting again today, these are the five things I'd learn first:
1. Design comes before Webflow.
Webflow is a powerful tool, but it won't make a poorly designed website look good. Learn the fundamentals of layout, spacing, typography, color, and visual hierarchy.
2. Learn HTML & CSS basics.
You don't need to become a programmer, but understanding sections, containers, divs, Flexbox, Grid, margins, and padding will make Webflow much easier to master.
3. Think in systems, not pages.
Professional websites aren't built page by page—they're built with reusable components, global styles, and consistent spacing.
4. Understand the CMS.
One of Webflow's biggest strengths is its built-in CMS. Instead of creating every blog, team page, or case study manually, you design one template and let the CMS generate the rest dynamically. Learning this early will completely change how you build websites.
5. Focus on solving business problems.
Clients don't pay for animations. They don't pay for fancy interactions.
They pay for websites that: • Load fast • Build trust • Generate leads • Increase sales • Are easy to manage
The sooner you understand that, the faster you'll grow as a Webflow developer.
Webflow isn't difficult. It's simply easier when you build on the right foundation.
