About this service

Summary

My approach to design combines strategy, functionality and aesthetics, delivering results that exceed user and business expectations. By helping stakeholders to understand their problems; aligning user needs with business objectives, we work to discover the right solutions.
Product design goes beyond UI and UX adopting a holistic approach that combines business objectives, market insights, and user research to create truly impactful digital products. Through an integrated, strategy-first mindset, ensuring each solution is both visually engaging and delivers measurable results for its clients.
I love working with clients, and their respective stakeholders, to understand and discover how we can solve complex questions. Working within cross-functional framework to help craft systems that align around business, tech, and most importantly help bring these services and systems to the intended users in a way that helps both users and the business succeed.

Process

☺️ 1. Empathise
Cultivate a genuine, empathetic understanding of the people and contexts you are designing for. Rather than making assumptions, spend time observing users in their real-world environments, conducting interviews or focus groups, and gathering qualitative and quantitative data. The goal is to reveal the deeper motivations, emotions, and pain points that users experience, paving the way for meaningful design opportunities.
Typical Methods:
User Research (interviews, observations, surveys), Competitive Analysis, Stakeholder Interviews, Empathy Mapping, Persona Creation.
🧩 2. Define
Synthesise all the information obtained during the Empathise stage to pinpoint the most critical problems and frame them clearly. By clustering your findings, identifying patterns, and translating insights into actionable statements, you establish a precise focus for the design challenge. This clarity ensures that subsequent design efforts remain aligned with user and business needs, preventing misinterpretation or scope creep.
Typical Methods:
Problem Definition & Statements, Affinity Diagrams, Theme Identification, User Journey Mapping, User Goals / Jobs-to-be-Done, Problem Prioritisation.
💡 3. Ideate
Generate a wide range of imaginative and innovative ideas that could potentially address the defined problem. This stage encourages teams to step outside conventional thinking and embrace divergent exploration before converging on the most promising concepts. By prioritising quantity at the outset, you ensure that no potential solution is overlooked.
Typical Methods:
Brainstorming (e.g., “How Might We…” sessions), Sketching & Rapid Ideation, Conceptual Workshops, Co-creation Sessions with Stakeholders.
⚙️ 4. Prototype
Transform the most viable ideas into tangible representations, such as wireframes or interactive prototypes, to quickly test assumptions and gather early feedback. Prototyping enables you to move from abstract concepts to practical iterations. It also allows you to fail fast and cheaply, ensuring that you refine ideas based on real-world insights rather than guesswork.
Typical Methods:
Low to Mid-fidelity wireframing (paper or digital), Clickable Prototypes, Rapid Prototyping Tools (Figma, Sketch, etc.), Interactive Mock-ups (Framer).
💻 5. Validate
Assess the effectiveness, usability, and overall appeal of your prototypes through rigorous testing with real or representative users. This stage is critical for identifying strengths and weaknesses, highlighting what resonates with users and what needs further improvement. Insights gleaned from testing drive iterative refinements, enabling you to refine the solution to meet both user needs and business goals.
Typical Methods:
Usability Testing (remote or in-person), A/B Testing, User Interviews & Surveys with Prototypes, Iterative Feedback Loops.
🚀 6. Implement
Translate the refined solution into a fully functional product or service that can be deployed in the market or organisation. This involves close collaboration with development teams, quality assurance, and other stakeholders to ensure a seamless handover from design to delivery. The solution is then launched, monitored, and continuously optimised based on real-world performance and user feedback.
Typical Methods:
Development Handoffs (Design Systems, Style Guides, Specifications), Collaborative Iteration with Engineering & QA, Launch Planning & Ongoing Optimisation.

So me and Richard were in the same agency for 2 years, Midnight Agency. We worked on various projects together and Richard was the lead UI architect on all of them. He is thorough and questions things to get to the bottom of the problem that is being solved. We worked on 2 large projects that involved deep UI and Richard was a huge influence on the direction of how the project was built and the tools we used to build it.

An expert in UI and UX design, Richard is my go to digital designer. Richard worked with WWF-UK to create the design and development of the mobile-first website for Sir David Attenborough's Netflix documentary film 'A Life On Our Planet'. Richard possesses an outstanding ability to understand user needs and translate them into intuitive, seamless designs. What sets Rich apart is his collaborative mindset and ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. I would highly recommend!
