Role: Lead UI/UX Designer Platform: Responsive Web Application (Mobile-First) Timeline: Q3/Q4 2025 Scope: End-to-End UX/UI Design, Gamification Strategy, Prototyping, Broadcast Overlay Assets

1. The Overview

The PlayStation Advent Calendar is a massive, highly anticipated annual digital event spanning across multiple countries. It offers fans 24 days of challenges, mini-games, and the chance to win exclusive PlayStation hardware, accessories, and digital rewards.
For the 2025 campaign, the goal was to completely overhaul the platform to be more engaging, accessible to non-PlayStation owners, and above all, intuitive.

2. The Challenge: The 300,000 User Drop-off

Data from the 2024 campaign revealed a critical UX failure: Over 300,000 users registered but never actually participated in the daily prize draws. User research and analytics indicated that the platform was too text-heavy, the onboarding was full of friction, and the core participation loop, earning tickets to enter draws was confusing. Users simply didn't understand how to play or why they were completing tasks. The platform felt like a series of administrative forms rather than a festive, gaming experience.

3. The Objective

Fix the Core Loop: Make the process of earning tickets and entering daily draws unmistakably clear.
Complete Visual Overhaul: Transition to a "less text, more icons" design philosophy tailored for a Gen-Z and modern gaming audience.
Deep Gamification: Transform passive daily check-ins into active, fun, and rewarding mini-games.
Lower the Barrier to Entry: Allow users to participate via standard social logins, rather than requiring a PlayStation Network (PSN) account upfront.

4. The Solution: Gamifying the Platform

To solve the massive drop-off rate, I redesigned the platform from the ground up, turning the Advent Calendar into a game itself.

A. "Less Text, More Icons"

The previous design relied on paragraphs of instructions. I stripped this back entirely. I utilized universally understood iconography to communicate value instantly. Navigation and daily tasks were transformed into highly visual, card-based layouts.

B. Transparent Reward Loops & Instant Gratification

To ensure users understood the value of playing, I designed a clear reward hierarchy:
Instant Rewards: Just logging in granted an immediate prize (like an exclusive avatar), creating instant gratification.
Activity Tickets: Playing games earned tickets. I made the ticket balance a prominent, sticky UI element so users always saw their "currency" growing.
The Daily Draw: A visually exciting section dedicated to "Today's Prizes on the Line," showing exactly what the tickets could be used for.

C. Interactive Mini-Games & Difficulty Tiers

Instead of basic click-through tasks, I designed the UI for a suite of custom browser games, including Christmas Ninja, Collect the Shapes, and Memory Match. To boost engagement, I introduced Difficulty Tiers (Easy/Hard) and Time Bonuses. For example, in Memory Match, users could opt for Hard Mode (a 6x6 grid with a Mistake Counter) to earn double tickets, adding a layer of risk and reward that resonated perfectly with gamers.

D. "Community Pulse" Daily Polls

To drive easy, daily engagement, I designed a frictionless Daily Poll feature. Users answered simple gaming questions (e.g., "What was your first PlayStation?") to earn a quick ticket. The UI featured real-time character counters and smooth transition states to make submission feel rewarding.

Integrating Astro Bot for Interactive Support

Instead of a boring, text-heavy FAQ page, I designed the "Ask Astrobot" Help Center. It functioned like a guided chat interface. Users clicked predefined questions, and the Astro Bot character "replied" in chat bubbles. This provided necessary help information while maintaining total control over the AI's responses, ensuring legal compliance while feeling playful.

Live Stream Broadcast Toolkit

The campaign included daily live draws broadcasted on Twitch, X, and Instagram. I expanded my scope to design the Stream Toolkit for the OBS production team. This included:
Vertical (9:16) safe-zone countdown timers.
"Lower Third" animated overlays featuring Astro Bot dropping bonus ticket codes for viewers.
Dynamic winner announcement screens optimized for both 16:9 desktop viewing and 9:16 mobile social stories.

5. The Result & Impact

By shifting from a text-heavy, confusing web portal to a highly visual, gamified application, the 2025 PlayStation Advent Calendar successfully fixed the core participation issue.
Clarity Achieved: The "less text, more icons" approach and clear ticket-to-prize loop eliminated the confusion that caused the previous 300,000+ user drop-off.
Daily Habit Formed: The addition of instant rewards, varied mini-games, and risk/reward difficulty levels transformed the calendar from a one-time visit into a daily destination for the gaming community.
Seamless Global Operations: The design gracefully handled multi-region legal constraints, ensuring a smooth prize redemption process for both the users and the backend administrative team.
