The City Lights

Gabrielle Maxwell

This poem notes the feeling of wanting to escape society and isolation.

The City Lights

The city lights are blinding
Yet I stay within.
Only so I have a home,
I tell myself.
The city sounds are deafening
Yet I stay within.
The busy street buzzes
With cars that speed down the road.
The city air is harsh and bitter
Yet I stay within.
Laced with the smells
Of week-old trash and hotdogs.
The city lights are blinding
And I can’t take it anymore.
I must run from here.
I need to be free.
