Vadapav & Mirchi Magnetic Pin Design for a Restaurant in Canada 🇨🇦

So, here’s the story! In February 2025, a friend of mine reached out with the most fun request ever - magnet pin designs for a restaurant in Canada.
The concept was built around two very familiar Indian food icons: vadapav and mirchi.
The goal was to create something that felt fun enough for customers to notice, collect, keep and associate with the restaurant.
The focus was not just to draw food but to create food characters that could become memorable little brand objects.

The brief? A Vada Pav and Mirchi on a date - yes, you heard that right! Picture them holding hands, giggling and just having the time of their life together. Food characters with all the cute vibes...basically, bringing two of my favorite foods to life in the most adorable way possible! 🍔🌶️ I was imagining the energy, the chemistry and of course, the fun!
I started by sketching these two characters, sending the rough ideas to my friend to make sure we were vibing on the same page. Once we were good to go, I dove into bringing these sketches to life. The result? Six vibrant, fun magnet pin designs that radiated all the cuteness and charm they needed. It took me about a week to finish everything and honestly, every moment of it was a blast.
And guess what? My friend LOVED them! It felt amazing seeing those simple sketches turn into something real and tangible that people could actually hold in their hands! I kept thinking, “Wow, these are gonna be on fridges, making people smile every time they open the door!”
The Challenge:
Food merchandise needs to be instantly readable.
A person should be able to look at the design for one second and understand what it is.
With magnet pins, this becomes even more important because the final product is small. The artwork cannot depend on too many tiny details or complicated textures.
The challenge was to make the vadapav and mirchi feel expressive and charming while still keeping the shapes clean enough for a physical product.
It had to feel cute, but not childish.
Indian, but not cliché.
Simple, but not boring.
What Makes It Different:
This project shows how illustration can become more than a post, GIF or digital artwork.
It can become a physical brand asset.
A small magnet pin can sit on a fridge, bag, counter, display board, packaging setup or customer space - quietly keeping the brand visible even after someone leaves the restaurant.
That is why food-themed merchandise works so well when the design is strong.
People may forget a normal flyer. They are less likely to forget a cute vadapav and mirchi magnet.
Why It Works for Restaurants and Food Brands:
Restaurants often need visual identity that feels memorable without becoming too corporate.
Food character merchandise is useful because it gives the brand something people can emotionally connect with.
A cute magnet pin can become:
a customer keepsake.
a small collectible
a restaurant merchandise item
a gifting add-on
a packaging insert
a counter display item
a social media photo prop
a playful extension of the menu
The final output was a set of custom vadapav and mirchi magnetic pin illustrations created for restaurant merchandise use. The designs were simple, cute, food-focused and easy to recognize - built to work as small physical products while still carrying the warmth and personality of Indian street food.
