About: Bringing big data, mobile apps and IoT into the oilfield.

Role: Lead UI/UX Designer

I joined as the Lead Designer and helped the company launch their MVP and beyond for iPhone, iPad, Android and Web. I created the design systems, lead customer discovery and user testing. Through the product's success, the company raised a $50m Series B from leaders in the industry.

A large part of the oil and gas industry is still dated and underutilizes technology, especially in the field and at the wells. WellAware focused on how to get quality data out of the oilfield and into the hands of supervisors and business owners so they can understand their actual oil production and be able to identify well issues. We had two methods of data input: manually is when a person (called a Gauger) drives out to a well to check the tank levels or automatic with WellAware’s proprietary remote monitoring device.

Our first design was focused on the iPad and the goal was to design a just-enough product for our first pilot customer to test and get feedback from.

While the pilot had a lot of success, we uncovered a lot of issues that would prevent us from scaling that we’d need to fix before moving to new features and other platforms.

My focus started at the smallest unit of the architecture, the individual data point. Creating a system around data types, inputs and how different series are charted, it would allow a user to add, edit and customize their own inputs. Freeing our support and product teams that had been bogged down by this.
