Overview
In 2017, PayMe from HSBC launched as one of the first peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps in a cash-based Hong Kong market. Since then, it’s been an underdog favourite with its Made for Hong Kong, by Hong Kong manifesto and local-first mindset.
The app experienced insane hyper growth reaching 1 million users in just 15 months. In 2022, the app now makes up for 70% of P2P transfers topping over 2.5+ mill users (out of a population of 7.3 mill) – and now even offering ways to pay merchants from family-owned businesses to large franchises, like McDonald’s and 7-Eleven.
Goal
PayMe was designed as a “social app,” but the initial product offering did not resonate well with local Hong Kongers.
And while it was wildly successfully in its first launch as a standalone P2P app, it faced challenges around conversion, engagement, and scalability with future roadmap features and products.
Solution
Redesign the mobile payments app in a simple and modern experience so that any Hong Konger can use i to add value to their day-to-day lives.
My Role
As User Interface Lead, I inherited a 100% consultant team and came into the Redesign project after an initial portion of the research was already underway. I worked closely with the Senior UI Designer to create scalable design system and processes, and worked alongside the UX Lead to conduct further research, workshops, customer interviews, and delivered features at pace (as of Dec 2021).
