Nemechek Navigator

A centralized hub for the Nemechek Protocol

Role: Product Designer Duration: Dec 2020 - July 2021 Tools: Figma, Notion, Zoom, Miro

Summary

The Nemechek Protocol is a medical protocol used primarily to treat autism, developmental delays, and autonomic dysfunction by focusing on gut health and inflammation. The Nemechek Navigator was conceived as a comprehensive companion tool to help parents and patients manage the complexities of the protocol.

The Problem

Information regarding the protocol is often scattered across books, various Facebook groups, and multiple websites. Users frequently expressed feeling overwhelmed by the amount of data and the difficulty of tracking dosages, symptoms, and progress over long periods.

The Solution

A unified digital platform that serves as a "navigator" for the journey. The solution includes:
A centralized resource library
An automated dosage and symptom tracker
A supportive community space
Progress visualization tools

Research & Discovery

To understand the user needs, I conducted qualitative and quantitative research including surveys and 1-on-1 interviews with caregivers.

Key Insights

Tracking Fatigue: Most users were using paper logs or basic spreadsheets, leading to inconsistent data.
Information Overload: Newcomers struggled to find "where to start" among thousands of archived posts in social media groups.
Isolation: Caregivers wanted a way to connect with others in similar stages of the protocol without the noise of general social media.

Defining the User

I created detailed personas and user flows to map out the primary paths for both new and experienced users of the protocol.

User Goals

Simplify: Make the daily routine of supplements (Inulin, Omega-3, Olive Oil) easy to log.
Educate: Provide verified information directly from the protocol's core teachings.
Connect: Allow users to share milestones and find local support.

Design Process

The design moved from low-fidelity wireframes to interactive prototypes. I focused on a "mobile-first" approach as most caregivers are managing their daily routines on the go.
Iteration: Initial testing showed that the tracker was too complex. I simplified the input method to "one-tap" logging.
Hierarchy: Placed the "Daily Log" at the forefront of the user dashboard.

Visual Identity

The visual language was designed to feel calm, trustworthy, and clinical yet accessible.
Colors: Soft blues and greens to promote a sense of healing and stability.
Typography: Poppins for headings (modern and friendly) and Open Sans for body text (highly readable).

High Fidelity Design

The final designs showcase a clean interface with clear calls to action.

Key Features

Protocol Dashboard: A snapshot of current dosages and recent progress.
Smart Tracker: Automated reminders and easy entry for supplements.
Community Hub: Discussion boards categorized by topic.
Resource Library: Searchable database of approved foods and protocol FAQs.

Impact & Reflection

The project successfully demonstrated how a centralized digital tool could reduce the mental load on caregivers.
Outcome: The design received positive feedback from community leaders for its clarity and ease of use.
Learning: Building for a medical niche requires extreme attention to data privacy and the accuracy of instructional content.
