The matching sweatsuit was 2020’s answer to every wayward millennial’s personal fashion predicament: What do you wear when you have nowhere to go?
Glossier You is my go-to fragrance when I want to smell good, even if no one can smell me. So let’s be clear, people could still smell me and in fact I got a lot of compliments during my summer quarantine walks when wearing Glossier You but it’s not a scent that feels like it was meant for anyone else...except for you. Glossier You is classified as an eau de perfume but it is very reminiscent of a body spray, and I mean that in the best possible way. Glossier You is the ghost of body sprays past, present, and future simply due to the nostalgia the scent inspires. It reminds me of the countless body sprays I went through trying to find my signature scent, one that would say this is me. So often body sprays failed this attempt, making me smell amateur sexy or like a Krispy Creme test kitchen, which are both lovely things to smell like in their own right. But they never screamed me, though spiritually I identify as a Krispy Creme test kitchen.
Glossier You is a switch, in that it claims both top and bottom notes. It forgoes middle notes. The top notes of the fragrance are pink pepper and green iris root. The pink pepper punches a subtle, spicy kick, which starts to fade after the initial spritz but can still be noted long after. It pairs well with the earthiness of the green iris root, creating an initial scent of sweet powdered earth, more powdery than sweet as it’s drowned out by the creaminess of the base notes. The base notes are the weightiest part of the fragrance, boasting musk, amberette, and ambrox. The base note of ambrox is likely responsible for the clean yet lived in scent, tethering the initial sweet earthiness to something flesh and tangible. Amberette adds a subtle layer of sweetness that intwines itself with the musk to add warmth and new money richness to the scent.
The matching sweatsuit’s dominance in 2020 stems from a few things. They’re comfortable, which is probably the most important factor. They’re easily replicable, so once they were trending, it was easy for fast fashion to create their own doppleganger sets. I don’t plan on getting rid of my impulse purchase matching set anytime soon, even when quarantine restrictions are up but I will always be transported to a certain time and place every time I put it on. I’ll probably be buried in one. It’s a timeless timepiece.
Glossier You is timeless but it also lends well to characterizing a moment in time undefinable but made commonplace by Its own peculiarity. We are in an era where nothing is shocking anymore because everything is shocking. The first time I smelled Glossier You I was shocked but at the same time unsurprised because I knew that it couldn’t smell any other way. It wouldn’t work if it did. Glossier You's tagline is that it smells like you but better and it feels unbelievable that such a fragrance could live up to such an ambiguous ask t within in the confines of a pink bottle with a pretty thumb print indent. Yet I’ve, we’ve, they’ve, she, him, and they have somehow been actualized. It’s like seeing a Granny wearing a gas station wolf shirt with an Old Celine bag on her arm: undefinable yet wholly understood, comfortable in its oddity. Glossier You smells just like you, and everyone you know, the best of them—of you—that is.
