Pulse Website Design

Pulse is a digital media platform designed to deliver premium video content covering current events, cultural perspectives, and political topics. The website design focuses on creating an engaging, content-first experience that makes high-quality journalism easily accessible to modern audiences.
The homepage serves as the primary gateway to all video content, featuring a strategic layout that prioritizes discoverability and immediate access. Videos are showcased through multiple entry points:
• Hero Section: Featured video stories are prominently displayed at the top of the homepage with large thumbnail images and play buttons, allowing users to watch content instantly without navigation.
• Snackables Section: Short-form video content is organized in a grid-style layout with clear thumbnails and titles, enabling quick browsing and one-click access to bite-sized content.
• Content Categories: Videos are organized by themed sections (OP-ED, Daily, Infographics, Weekly) with visual cards that include video thumbnails, making it easy to explore content by type and format.
The design employs a clean, modern aesthetic with strong visual hierarchy, ensuring that video content remains the focal point while maintaining easy navigation and seamless playback functionality throughout the user experience.

Case study

Challenge
Pulse, a digital media company focused on delivering premium video journalism, needed a website redesign that would transform their content delivery model. The existing platform struggled with video discoverability, had a cluttered navigation structure, and failed to engage modern audiences who expect Netflix-style content browsing experiences. The key challenge was designing a homepage that would serve as both an engaging entry point and a comprehensive content hub, allowing users to discover and access videos without friction.
Approach
I took a content-first design strategy, analyzing user behavior patterns from leading video platforms and news sites. The approach centered on three core principles:
Immediate Visual Hierarchy: Creating a clear content structure that guides users from hero content to specialized sections
Minimal Navigation Friction: Enabling video playback directly from homepage thumbnails
Content Categorization: Organizing videos by format, frequency, and theme to match different viewing preferences
The design process involved wireframing multiple homepage layouts, prototyping interactive video components, and creating a responsive grid system that adapts seamlessly across devices. Special attention was paid to loading performance, ensuring video thumbnails and metadata loaded efficiently even with extensive content.
Solution
The final design features a multi-layered homepage architecture:
• A hero section showcasing featured long-form content with bold typography and full-width video thumbnails • A "Snackables" grid displaying bite-sized video content in an easily scannable format • Themed content sections (OP-ED, Daily, Infographics, Weekly) with visual distinction • Case study spotlights presenting curated video experiences with location-based storytelling • A persistent navigation system that provides context without overwhelming the content
The visual design employs a modern aesthetic with generous white space, strong contrast ratios, and a typography system that ensures readability across all content types. Video thumbnails feature consistent aspect ratios with clear play button indicators, making interaction patterns immediately recognizable.
Results
The redesigned Pulse website successfully transformed video accessibility and user engagement. The homepage now serves as an effective content discovery engine, with users able to access any video within one click from the landing page. The structured categorization system allows different audience segments to quickly find content matching their interests, whether they're seeking in-depth analysis, quick updates, or visual storytelling.
The clean, modern interface positions Pulse as a premium digital journalism platform, competing effectively with established media brands while maintaining its unique editorial voice and content approach.
