Tandem

Managers and engineers alike can turn API specs into a simple but robust low-code workspace. Users can quickly scope out potential partnerships or launch fully functional workflows without a dedicated developer. Platform: Web My Role: UX Design
Discovery & Planning
Tandem's founder was an excellent resource to the design process, having a background as both a full-stack developer and technical manager, he was able to guide us through the use cases and pain points for both user types (technical and semi-technical). I conducted a competitive analysis and collected the best practices from products in similar spaces before diving into design mode.

Creating Workflows

The core experience of the product is creating and testing workflows. For low-code tools, a visual workspace where users can create actions and make connections is a common pattern. We focused on making these interactions feel natural and discoverable. We also needed to find a way to communicate the required schema mapping tasks users need to complete after a connection is made.

Schema Mapping

Schema Mapping was a complex UX challenge solved by using good defaults and helpful tool tips.
Schema Mapping was a complex UX challenge solved by using good defaults and helpful tool tips.
The most complex task users are required to complete is the schema mapping exercise. In order for data to flow smoothly from one API to another, users must specify the corresponding field in the second API. And to make things even more complex, these fields often are of different formats, and adaptations are often required for these APIs to successfully pass data. AI recommendations coming soon!
Some configurations require complex adaptations to transform data into the expected format.

We worked hand in glove with the Tandem team to fully understand the technical requirements and iterated until we landed on a concept we all felt confident in.

Our UI team did an exceptional job creating a brand and design language that blends the product's highly technical nature with the warm whimsy desired by the less technical user base.

Worked with Tandem's founder to design the user experience for this MVP, optimizing for time-to-value and streamlining the creation of complex workflows.
