Flickan

Alejandro Luis-Castillo

Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte is a lied by Jean Sibelius from his op. 37 No. 5 originaly written for voice and piano and inspired in the poem of the same name by Johan Ludvig Runeberg.
In 2010, I decided to do an arrangement for orchestra and tenor, dedicated to my beloved teacher Sven-David Sandstróm (1949-2019) since we had numerous talks about Sibelius music and how it connected with my own teacher´s style.
If you listen carefully, the lied's sound is continuously transforming thus creating an ambience that locks the thru meaning of the poem.
The tittle in english is "The girl returned from meeting her lover" and is a story about a girl who is dazzled by his first love. She meets him in the forest and things are upscaling. At the beguiining, everything is clean, beautiful and pristine, but each stanza, when she returns, his father ask her "what has reddened your lips? and she gives different inocent answers until the last paragraph were she has descovered her lover betrayal.

For those who doesn't know, an arrangement is different than a cover. The first keeps the notes, harmony and melody but translates them into another genere with other instruments and while you do that, you need to tweek the music here and there to make it work in another medium; while a cover is just a new version of a previous song.
This piece demonstrates my first hand knowledge of the instruments, the orchestra and the creativity needed to use the orchestral sounds in a metaphoric way.
