Systems Game Designer · Creative Director · Project Manager

A psychological meta-horror game released on Steam, blending surreal storytelling, exploration, and environmental boss encounters.

Overview

The Nick is a narrative-driven meta-horror game where players explore a mysterious mansion hidden deep within a forest. Instead of relying on traditional horror tropes, the game blurs the line between the player and the game itself through psychological storytelling, fourth-wall-breaking techniques, and systemic gameplay.

As the project's lead designer and creative director, I was responsible for transforming the initial concept into a cohesive gameplay experience that balanced narrative, mechanics, and production constraints.

The Challenge

The main design challenge was creating a horror experience that felt psychologically unsettling rather than simply frightening.
To achieve this, I built the game's core around two complementary pillars:
Meta-narrative, using fourth-wall-breaking interactions to reduce the perceived barrier between the player and the game.
A psychologically grounded story, where gameplay mechanics reflect the protagonist's trauma and emotional state instead of existing independently from the narrative.
At the same time, exploration alone wasn't enough to maintain player engagement. The game required short-term gameplay goals that could create tension without contradicting the story.

Systems Design

Rather than introducing traditional combat, I designed a custom gameplay loop called "No Weapons Fights."
Since the protagonist is intentionally vulnerable and defenseless, players cannot defeat enemies through direct combat. Instead, every encounter becomes a systems-driven environmental puzzle where players must:
analyze enemy behaviour,
identify gameplay patterns,
use the environment creatively,
or escape under constant pressure.
This approach reinforced both the narrative themes and production scope while creating boss encounters that felt memorable and distinct from conventional horror games.
Early playtests showed that these encounters successfully broke up exploration with moments of high tension and became one of the game's strongest gameplay features.

UI / UX Design

One of the biggest UX challenges was preserving immersion.
Although the game uses retro pixel-art visuals, I deliberately avoided a traditional retro interface.
Instead, I designed a minimalist modern UI that contrasts with the pixel-art world through contemporary animations, sound design, and visual effects.

Most interface elements remain hidden during exploration, allowing players to focus entirely on the environment, while combat introduces only a minimal contextual HUD.
This design supports the game's central goal of making the player forget about the interface and remain immersed in the experience.

My Contributions

Led the overall game design vision
Designed gameplay systems and progression
Invented the No Weapons Fights gameplay framework
Wrote the complete Game Design Document
Designed narrative structure and pacing
Built gameplay prototypes in Unity
Developed the project's gameplay scripting framework (EmeraldCore)
Designed UI/UX flow and interaction systems
Coordinated production between programming and art teams

Outcome

The Nick was successfully released on Steam and established the design foundation for future episodes of the series. The project demonstrated how psychological storytelling, systems-driven encounters, and minimalist UX could work together to create a distinctive horror experience.
Player's Reviews

Undertale meets Amnesia! This meta-horror experience sends you to investigate a very haunted mansion. There's a bit of everything in there: exploration, dialogue, combat, fetch quests... And lots of humour. You can't get bored with such a cocktail. Nice music, great sound effects. The combat is Dark Souls hard so bring your A game!

I really enjoyed this game, primarily because of how beautiful it is. You can tell the developers put a lot of effort into the lighting, and for games of a similar type, it's very well-developed in that regard...

Literally soooo good I cannot express how much I enjoyed playing this, amazing soundtrack, story and very relatable in parts. Keep up the work devs, I need more.
