Overview
Echo Station is a top-down survival horror game set inside an abandoned underground research facility. The client approached me after conducting an early playtest, where players enjoyed the atmosphere and first impressions but gradually lost engagement after 15–20 minutes.
Rather than redesigning the game from scratch, my role was to analyze the existing systems, identify the underlying causes of player disengagement, and provide practical recommendations that could be realistically implemented during production.
Design Goal
The consultation focused on strengthening the game's systemic design while preserving its existing vision.
The main objectives were:
analyze the current gameplay loop
identify progression bottlenecks
improve long-term player motivation
increase replayability through systemic changes
provide practical, production-friendly recommendations
Design Challenge
The prototype already had a solid foundation, including exploration, inventory management, crafting, environmental puzzles, enemy encounters, and progression through unlockable sectors. However, player feedback revealed several recurring issues:
resources became abundant too quickly
crafting lost relevance after the first recipe
exploration became predictable
previously visited areas had little reason to revisit
progression introduced more content without significantly changing player decision-making
So the challenge was making the existing systems interact in more meaningful ways.
Systems Analysis
Instead of recommending additional content, I focused on strengthening the relationships between existing systems.
The consultation explored:
resource economy and crafting loops
progression pacing
player motivation
risk/reward balance
exploration variability
long-term engagement
systemic interaction between mechanics
Rather than proposing isolated features, I analyzed how each system affected the others and identified opportunities to increase depth through recontextualization instead of complexity.
Design Recommendations
The report included practical design directions such as:
improving resource sinks and crafting decisions
giving players meaningful reasons to revisit previous sectors
introducing controlled gameplay variability instead of relying on pure randomness
creating stronger risk/reward scenarios
allowing existing mechanics to gain new roles as progression advances
Each recommendation was presented as a production-oriented design hypothesis based on the available prototype and playtest data rather than speculative redesign.
