HBO 'What's New' Series Editing, Sound & Design

Nathanael Sams

HBO “What’s New” Series

Over the course of a year, I edited and designed HBO’s monthly “What’s New” series. This was a flagship campaign showcasing new and upcoming titles across the platform. Each edition required original storytelling, narrative editing, and music-driven pacing to match HBO’s cinematic voice while maintaining monthly freshness and variety.

Featured I HBO October

One standout piece, “What’s New in October,” featured hi-end sound design and rhythmic editing that elevated the campaign’s horror theme. The client response was so strong that HBO paid for it to air as a featured spot during NFL Thursday Night Football.

Creative Approach

Every project began with music sourcing and structure building, selecting a track, editing stems for dynamics, and using drops and transitions to highlight key dialogue moments from upcoming shows.

Title Treatments

Each month featured a new design language and motion concept — seen in the evolving grid of title treatments that marked the identity of each edition.

Motion Design

I designed custom motion graphics by hand for every release, ensuring each month’s animation style complemented its content visually.

Audio Expertise

When stems weren’t provided, I used my audio engineering background to isolate dialogue and rebuild the mix from scratch

Results

The series achieved over 200K YouTube views, drove subscription engagement, and earned ongoing collaboration with HBO for more than a year.
