Cushion - AI Finance Management

🫀 Overview

Money management usually means logging in, digging through statements, and stitching together a picture yourself. Cushion skips that work. It quietly connects to your accounts, read-only, and keeps a running sense of where things stand — so instead of checking on your money, you're just aware of it.

☠️ The Problem

Most people's money is scattered — a checking account here, a credit card there, savings somewhere else — and no single view of how it all adds up. Budgeting apps ask for constant upkeep: manual entries, categorizing every purchase, checking in just to feel in control. That upkeep rarely lasts.

🪢 The Solution

Cushion takes a quiet, read-only approach to staying financially aware. Link your accounts once, and it keeps everything synced in the background — balances, transactions, categories — without asking you to enter a thing. A coverage report shows exactly how much of your financial picture it can see, so you always know what's tracked and what isn't.

🐤 Approach

We started by cutting the feature list, not adding to it. Every finance app we looked at assumed people want more control — more categories, more manual tagging, more dashboards to visit. We bet on the opposite: that most people want less to think about, not more to manage. So the work became about restraint — deciding what Cushion should never ask of you, and being upfront about the limits of what it can see (read-only, nothing it can move or touch).

🎃 End Goal

Above all, Cushion needed to earn trust before it earned attention — a financial tool people would let quietly watch their accounts without feeling watched themselves. That meant being explicit about boundaries: read-only access, clear coverage reporting, no surprises about what's connected or what isn't. We leaned on calm, understated visuals over anything that looked like a dashboard demanding to be checked. Where the app did need input, we kept it to small, occasional decisions rather than routine upkeep. The measure of success wasn't how polished the interface looked — it was whether people stopped thinking about it at all.

🦺 Philosophy

Nothing about Cushion should feel like a tool you're operating. Screens stay sparse, motion is slow and unhurried, and nothing pulls at your attention unless it's earned the right to. The visual language avoids anything that reads as a metric to chase — no streaks, no red numbers, no urgency for its own sake. Every choice ran through one test: does this let someone feel more at ease with their money, or does it just give them something new to watch?
