Education, as an institution, was first provided only for boys, while girls were expected to be taught at home (Ogden, 2011, p. 13). This began the upheld tradition of single-sex schools with countries such as Ireland and the UK having the longest history of single-sex education. However, single-sex education began to fight for its ideologies as liberal views started to spread in the early 20th century. Following this, the concept of co-educational schools began (Sullivan, Joshi & Leonard, 2010, p. 7).
