Project overview

StoryNest is a mobile app designed to help parents create calming bedtime routines through engaging storytelling. The app provides a curated library of age-appropriate bedtime stories with soothing narration, ambient sounds, and sleep-focused features. StoryNest addresses the universal challenge parents face: getting children to settle down and fall asleep peacefully after busy days. The goal was to create an experience that helps both children relax and gives parents a reliable tool for consistent, stress-free bedtimes.
Problem
Parents consistently struggle with bedtime routines, often spending 45-60 minutes trying to get children to sleep. Traditional bedtime stories require parents to be fully present and energized after exhausting days, making consistency difficult. Many parents resort to screens (tablets, TV) which actually disrupts children's sleep due to blue light exposure. Existing storytelling apps either lacked quality content, were too stimulating with bright animations and interactive elements, or didn't account for the parent's need to gradually disengage as the child falls asleep. Research showed that 73% of parents found bedtime "stressful" and 58% felt guilty about inconsistent bedtime routines. Children aged 3-8 particularly struggled with the transition from active play to sleep, needing a calming bridge activity.
Solutions StoryNest features a carefully curated library of bedtime stories professionally narrated with calm, soothing voices that gradually slow in pace to encourage sleep. Stories are categorized by age group (3-5, 6-8, 9-11) and length (10, 15, 20, 30 minutes) to fit different bedtime needs. The app includes ambient background sounds (rain, ocean waves, forest sounds) that continue after the story ends with a gradual fade. Designed a dimming feature that automatically reduces screen brightness as the story progresses, minimizing sleep disruption. Created a "Wind Down" mode that suggests a series of calmer stories as bedtime approaches, preparing children for sleep. Added favorites and custom playlists so parents can queue multiple stories for children who need longer settling time. Included "Continue Tomorrow" bookmarking for longer stories that can span multiple nights, building anticipation.
