eAdaalat: eCourts Management System

e-Adalat is a platform (website) that prioritizes court cases and suggests the priority order to the judges in which these cases should be heard so that no pending cases will be there and no case is left pending for long periods of time. This project led to us winning the Best Design category at HackPrinceton Spring'22.

Regularly courts are getting many cases and currently, it is becoming challenging to prioritize those cases. There are about 73,000 cases pending before the Supreme Court and about 44 million in all the courts of India. Cases that have been in the courts for more than 30 years, as of January 2021

Our software is developed for prioritizing and allocations of dates to the cases based on the following parameters:

Time of filing of charge sheet

The severity of the crime and the sections involved

Last hearing date

Degree of responsibility of the alleged perpetrators.

Starting any good solution begins with understanding the problem, so we started with contacting judicial officials which included a district judge, a high court lawyer, and a manager in a district court. Speaking with them helped us understand how things work on the ground level and what problems they truly faced every day.

One of the major problems was the fact that lots of cases would go on for years and keep getting postponed due to multiple reasons. So there is a need to prioritize the cases which have been going on for a very long time.

Another major problem is how the current system is based on physical forms and documents (on paper) which leads to cumbersome handling of these documents. Our aim was to streamline the basic proceedings by putting them online where the officials can fill out forms and upload/manage documents online through our platform.
