Pang Xunqin Tribute
A vector reinterpretation of Pang Xunqin's "The Girl on the Couch" (1930) — a study of Chinese modernism at the moment it absorbed Art Deco and Parisian avant-garde into its own visual language.
The exercise: translate a painting into flat vector form without losing its atmosphere. Pang's work lives on the tension between decorative flatness and sensual line — rebuilding it meant deciding, shape by shape, what carries the mood and what was just paint. Muted olive, black, and one field of orange do the work the original's texture did.
Part of my ongoing research into how different eras and cultures construct atmosphere — the visual literacy behind my brand work for culture-driven businesses.
