Projects: LTBI Educational Robot

Last year, ViDA Studio collaborated with National Dong Hwa University and the Centers for Disease Control under the Ministry of Health and Welfare to create an educational robot focused on Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) for Indigenous communities.

The goal is to make it easier for both young and elderly people to understand the importance of treatment and to accept it more readily.

Initially, the plan was to use AI for automatic Q&A, but after much discussion, we realized that many features didn’t actually require AI technology.
Rather than relying on AI for interactions, we decided to design the robot to be more human-like. We drew inspiration from the concept of the Taroko tribe's elder healer, or "msapuh" in the Taroko language.
The idea is to have a wise elder figure care for the younger generation, explaining the seriousness of this condition.

Msapuh and his young helper.

Upon entering, users are greeted warmly by Msapuh, followed by an introduction to tuberculosis by Msapuh.
I really love this photo; it feels like a grandmother is about to share old stories.

Self-Assessment (Seven-Point Screening Method)

In the original educational material, there is a seven-point screening method.
While it is possible to use a numerical approach for screening, it didn't feel like something Msapuh would say.
Interactive Screening
So we made the results more humanized, with a touch of elder wisdom.
Besides the screening, there are also introductions to the onset of the disease and the possibility of latent infection.
Finally, the robot provides hospital resources.
In addition to informing users about free X-ray resources,
there is also information on related hospitals, health centers, and outpatient services.
Robot Introduction
This project, in collaboration with the Indigenous College of National Dong Hwa University, has allowed us to understand that many people in our society are striving to support their communities.
It is an honor to give back to Hualien in this way.
Whether you are Indigenous or not, or whether you have tuberculosis or not, I think interacting with our robot could be a valuable experience.
