Why Women Tend to Waste More Time Than Men

Men and women tend to spend their time differently. Although there have been steps towards equality in our world, men's and women's expectations tend to differ. The expectations were planted into our minds from previous generations, and in the working world, women could be perceived as wasting time because, in most cases, they don’t work long days in the office. Women are less likely to work overtime to finish a project and go home to their families.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does an annual survey that measures the time people spend doing various tasks. Looking at the statistics of this survey, we can witness which areas men and women choose to spend their time. The most recent survey is from 2019 since the suspension of the 2020 survey was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
First looking at the statistics of work and work activities we can see a huge gap of time spent between men and women. Men tend to spend more time at work than women do. On an average day, men will spend around four hours and 22 minutes, while women will spend two hours and 55 minutes. That is 1.5 times the amount of hours a man will devote to working or conducting work activities compared to women.
Knowing the number of times men and women spend, on average, working on their jobs or careers, we can look at other aspects of their lives. Women tend to be seen as soft and more of a caretaker. This is partly because women spend more time on family and household work, whereas men spend more time on work, leisure, and sports activities.
Overall, men spend an average of seven hours doing leisure activities on weekend days and four hours and 49 minutes on weekdays. While women spend four hours and 27 minutes on weekends and five hours and 49 minutes on weekdays doing leisure activities.
Women tend to focus more on tasks that must be completed before participating in leisure activities. These are the tasks that tend to pull them away from their jobs.
Women, on average, spend 1.5 times more hours on total household activities than men. The household activities that women tend to partake in more than men include; preparing food, cleaning, laundry, and household management, although men take more time on yard work and interior and exterior maintenance and repairs.
The divide between men’s and women’s time spent on household activities is highly noticeable if we look at the actual hours spent on each task. For instance, in food preparation, women spend about 48 minutes while men spend around 23 minutes. In cleaning tasks, women spend on average 26 minutes, and men spend an average of ten minutes. Cleaning and food preparation tasks are two main expectations women were given and are still upholding.
The first few months and years of a child’s life are essential for a parent or both parents to be around and care for their children. This time helps children’s mental and physical health and overall wellbeing.
Women take an average of 10 weeks off when their child is born, leaving work for another to complete while they are gone. There have been advancements in equality that allow men to take time off when a child is born.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statisticsin 2019, the unemployment rate of women with kids, under the age of 6, was 4%. While the unemployment rate of men with kids under 6 was 2.2%. If we look at full-time employment, the numbers show that 1.53 times amount of men with kids under six work full-time compared to women.
Regarding the total care and help of household children, mothers spend 1.8 to 1.94 times more daily hours than fathers. Especially when the children are younger, women are spending more time caring for their children. For children under the age of six, women spend on average two hours and 45 minutes providing overall care while men spend one hour and 25 minutes. Women are the primary ones to care for a child’s physical needs and play with the children.
The care of children has been an expectation of women for decades. Men expected to make money while women stayed home with the kids. Although the expectations shifted so women could work and move closer to equal pay, women are still viewed as the primary caretakers.
The aspects of family and home care take priority over their work and work activities for women. In certain lights, this can be seen as wasting time. Women are taking time away from when they could be working to care for other matters. They are calling out of work when their kids are sick, or the babysitter cancels. They aren’t staying late to finish a project because their child has a sporting event or a concert. They are leaving working around three to pick their children up from school.
Women are taking away valuable time from a company, in which projects and tasks could be completed. The former gender roles are still predominant in our society and are shown by the way women prioritize the tasks they possess.
