Traffic Data Analytic System — Lead Product & UX Designer

Client: Hong Kong Government | Project Value: Over HKD 200 Million Role: Sole Product & UX Designer
I led the UX and product design for a large-scale government initiative aimed at turning Hong Kong’s traffic data into meaningful, actionable insights. This system visualizes real-time and historical traffic conditions across road segments and integrates predictive analytics for traffic speed, incident trends, and weather impact.
Project Challenges
The tender document was lengthy and disorganized, filled with fragmented requirements. To clarify the real needs, I hosted workshops with stakeholders from multiple departments. However, I soon realized the stakeholders lacked a shared vision and were influenced by political concerns—one even suggested, “I wish to have a heatmap as it seems beautiful!”
Faced with this ambiguity and a tight budget, I took the lead in aligning expectations, educating stakeholders on feasibility, and shaping requirements into actionable goals.
Strategic Actions
Market & Competitive Research: Explored global traffic analytics dashboards to identify valuable, realistic use cases and guide feature development.
Requirement Consolidation: Structured chaotic input into defined modules and user flows. Collaborated closely with engineers and data scientists to ensure alignment and feasibility.
Data-Driven Design: Studied available data formats and sources to define how each insight—like traffic speed prediction or incident correlation—could be visualized.
Wireframing & Iteration: Created early hand-drawn wireframes to communicate concepts. These visual aids helped stakeholders give more concrete feedback and aligned the team around shared goals.
User Interface & Icon Design: Designed a clean, scalable UI and a full set of custom icons suitable for large-screen dashboards used by government departments.
Tender Compliance & Documentation: Carefully documented all design decisions and ensured compliance with each KPI outlined in the tender. Authored clear explanations for each KPI and its calculation to ensure shared understanding across technical and non-technical audiences.
Outcome
The system successfully delivered a comprehensive view of Hong Kong’s traffic conditions through modular dashboards for real-time monitoring, historical analysis, and predictive insights.
Importantly, the processed traffic data is now shared with the public and made available to bus operators and railway companies, enabling better service planning, traffic forecasting, and smart mobility development.
