TEMPO is a free rave in Abuja every Friday, with a ticketed KLUB TEMPO edition every fourth Friday. The site had to say when the next night is, sell the special ones, and feel like the room does at 2am. I designed and built it solo, from an empty project to live in about a week.
The hero is a video with a red pulse beating at 124 BPM behind the copy, so even a slow connection gets something moving in time. Scroll reveals run on GSAP and Lenis, and a 55-photo gallery pages instantly with arrow keys or a swipe.
The piece I had the most fun with is Find Your Tempo, a rhythm game at /play. Pick a genre, from Afrohouse to Amapiano, and tap on the beat. Every groove is synthesised live in the browser, and at the end it tells you whether you rush or drag, and by how many milliseconds.
The schedule runs itself. Dates are computed from the calendar, so the site never lists a Friday that has passed and nobody has to remember to update it.
