Gamification Feature for Campaign #ForChange — UX Case Study

Overview

As a UI/UX Design Intern participating in the Kampus Merdeka program, I collaborated with a cross-functional team to design gamification features for the Campaign #ForChange app. This project focused on transforming social actions into an interactive journey, encouraging users to build positive habits through game mechanics such as challenges, XP points, and reward systems.

Problem

The primary challenge was maintaining user consistency and motivation in completing social action challenges. Without an engaging feedback loop, users often experienced a drop in interest, leading to lower engagement rates and difficulty in retaining users for long-term social impact.

Goal

Boost Engagement: Foster higher user interaction through fun and rewarding gamified experiences.
Drive Retention: Motivate users to return to the app regularly to complete weekly missions and social tasks.
Encourage Consistency: Ensure users stay committed to completing their social actions through XP levels and competitive leaderboards.

Constraints

Research Limitations: Relying on secondary research and AMA sessions due to limited direct access to users during the initial empathize stage.
Team Synchronization: Executing the entire design process collectively, which required high-level coordination to align workflows and design decisions.
Feature Prioritization: Navigating a wide range of ideas to select and prioritize features that offered the highest impact without overextending project scope.

Project Outcomes

"Excellent" SUS Score: Achieved an average System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 86.5, placing the design in the Grade A (Excellent) category.
Validated Iterations: Successfully identified and resolved navigation friction, such as optimizing the "Champ" mascot save buttons, based on direct user testing feedback.
Comprehensive Feature Set: Delivered a robust ecosystem of features, including mini-games (Crossword, Tap and Found), a digital store, and global leaderboards.
