The Brief

Newcastle University needed to bridge the communication gap between complex academic initiatives and their target audience. Specifically, they wanted to translate a specialized university program into an engaging, highly digestible visual narrative that would drive awareness, foster community engagement, and clearly articulate the real-world impact of their student-led clinics and research, all without losing the institutional credibility tied to the university brand.

The Challenge

Academic programs are dense by nature. The video had to take technical, institutional content and turn it into something a student, partner, or member of the public could instantly understand and connect with. The balance was tricky: modern and engaging, but still unmistakably Newcastle University.

My Process

Research & storyboarding — Worked through the program's key messages in Figma, structuring a narrative arc that prioritized clarity and emotional resonance over institutional jargon.
Custom illustration — Designed brand-aligned 2D assets in Adobe Illustrator, maintaining strict adherence to Newcastle University's visual identity while keeping the look modern and human-centric.
Animation & compositing — Brought the story to life in After Effects with polished 2D animation, building a seamless visual narrative that guides viewers through the program's purpose and impact.

The Result

Clearer audience understanding — Transformed dense academic concepts into a seamless 2D animated story that made the program instantly accessible to students, partners, and the public.
Increased engagement & reach — Delivered a polished visual asset optimized for landing pages, presentations, and social channels, resulting in higher click-through rates and better audience retention.
