The Concept

The identified problem is the lack of accessible internet navigation in and around the Braamfontein, Johannesburg area. The issue is not the availability of wireless internet in the area, but access is limited as it is not easily identified.
*Using the Human-Centred Design process as outlined by IDEO to develop potential solutions.

User Experience(UX) related problem in South Africa

South Africa is known to have one of Africa’s highest data prices; according to Research ICT Africa, South Africa is ranked 33rd out of 46 countries in terms of data per gigabyte. The connectivity issue is linked to high data costs, and simply put, people do not have enough access internet. High data costs and lack of connectivity is the chosen UX design
problem, due to the problem affecting not only the present but will affect the future of South Africa significantly. With little infrastructure found primarily in rural areas, only
the cities benefit from these technologies. The national government should look into ways to increase access to utilising current technologies, providing free internet access(Wi-Fi) to all South Africans long term.

4. Programmer
5. Establishment owner
Sub-Roles:

Design challenge

How can one make wifi internet points more identifiable without
compromising on pandemic restrictions in the Braamfontein area?
Questionnaire:
The questionnaire is a method that allows for more accessible data collection in comparison to the standard individual or group interview. Interviews will be more challenging to conduct during this coronavirus pandemic period. The questionnaire will contain the following type of questions:
1. Do you work in the area, or are you a student?
2. How do you use data or wifi for the internet?
3. How do you save your data?
4. Do you have your wifi router?
5. Are there wifi internet access points near or around your area, outside
    of your residence?
6. What do you use the internet for?
7. How much time to do spend on your device/s?

Ideation Phase

Key Insights

1. The problem is in the Braamfontein area.
2. Braamfontein is a hub for youth because there are many tertiary institutions in the area, ie. Wits University.
3. Braamfontein has many cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs, ie.Kitcheners, Maboneng etc…
4. Youth demographic need Wi-Fi internet access almost 24/7. Tertiary institutions have Wi-Fi internet access inside.
5. Many Internet cafes available in the area but not often used due to coronavirus
6. “Smart City” initiative offers 300MB of free Wi-Fi to anyone connected for 24 hours… not enough for social media use, school, work etc.…
