TSONGA-XITORI FESTIVAL

The design solution is promotional pieces for a fictitious festival called the Tsonga

cultural festival (Tsonga-Xitori Festival). The festival is done to celebrate "fictitious"

Tsonga creativity, culture and storytelling. The festival will be a summer festival and

encourage people to wear bright and vibrant colours in celebration of the culture. The

festival will happen over three days in September during Heritage Month in South Africa.

The festival will have categories:

1. Filimi (Film)

2. Xifaniso Vutshila (Visual Arts)

3. Vulavurile Rito (Spoken Word)

4. Famba (Movement)

5. Mbhurisano (Dialogue)

The platforms used are Instagram and a landing page website. The landing page will allow visitors to understand the meaning behind the festival and to purchase tickets and purchase merchandise. The merchandise will consist of tote bags, t-shirts and sketchbooks.

Instagram is a visual-based platform and has a large young demographic between 18-34 but mostly between 18-24. The festival is meant to attract youth to Tsonga culture and encourage the creation of films surrounding the Tsonga culture. The social media will provide easy access to content and the website as well. The content on Instagram will include merchandise photos, interviews and festival content. 

The design process that one followed was specific to the theoretical research, as explained. Exploring the study, its paradigms, theories and critical elements from the literature review, a design solution was created. The design solution was a fictitious festival to celebrate Tsonga culture and to encourage creativity and storytelling of the culture and predominantly by Tsonga people.

In reflection, the design solution was eye-opening for me, as the research led me to understand more about a culture, specifically my own culture. This process has allowed me to appreciate Tsonga culture, particularly in the attempt to interpret the culture and integrate it into the design solution.
