About the Project

48by40 is a sophisticated, cloud-based IoT platform designed to revolutionize equipment tracking and maintenance for the transportation industry. By integrating live GPS telemetry with automated maintenance workflows, the system provides a "single pane of glass" for lessors, lessees, and logistics providers to manage high-value assets in real-time.

The Challenge

The transportation sector often suffers from "dark assets", equipment that is lost or underutilized due to manual tracking. The project required:
IoT Synchronization: Processing massive streams of GPS data from SkyBitz hardware into actionable map visualizations.
Operational Silos: Bridging the gap between four distinct user roles (Lessor, Lessee, Maintenance, and Logistics) with data isolation.
Logistics Complexity: Automating the "Repositioning" lifecycle, which involves complex quoting and point-to-point move tracking.
Scalability: Handling thousands of equipment records and location pings while maintaining high availability.

My Approach

As the Lead Developer and Automation Engineer, I architected a high-concurrency environment to handle real-time logistics:
IoT & Mapping Pipeline: Engineered a robust integration with the SkyBitz API and Google Maps, creating an interactive tracking system that monitors equipment position, speed, heading, and battery health.
Microservices Backend: Built a Django REST Framework backend supported by Celery and Redis for asynchronous task processing, ensuring that heavy GPS data ingestion never slowed down the user interface.
Automated Maintenance Workflows: Developed a complete lifecycle engine for maintenance requests, from priority-based scheduling to automated vendor notifications and invoice generation.
Multi-Tenant RBAC: Implemented a complex Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system that dynamically serves different dashboards to Corporate Lessors and Maintenance Providers while ensuring strict data privacy.
Lifecycle Communication: Automated the platform’s engagement strategy using the Resend API, triggering transactional emails for onboarding, status updates, and repositioning alerts.
Cloud Infrastructure: Orchestrated the deployment on AWS EC2 with Nginx and SSL, optimizing the database schema for cross-tenant analytics and rapid location queries.

Results

The platform transformed 48by40 from a manual operation into a tech-forward logistics leader. We achieved real-time asset visibility, eliminated manual document "chasing" through centralized cloud storage, and automated the repositioning process, significantly reducing operational overhead. The system now supports a high-volume marketplace connecting lessors and lessees with 100% digital audit trails.
