Rapid-prototyped a literacy tool for government schools

A Teach For India fellow in Ahmedabad, India was teaching a class where 25% of students read English below grade level.
Every student got the same instruction and homework. The students falling behind fell back further behind, and gradually disengaged. The problem was that revision happened outside class, where nothing adapted to each student's level. I built VocabPal with the teacher and students: a five-stage reading assessment that finds a student's level in ten questions, then adapts to it. Runs on older tablets, works offline, speaks in a natural Indian English voice. 500 students identified across Teach For India's Ahmedabad schools. Impact: giving one teacher the eyes she needed for 45 students at once.
