Introduction

This case study focuses on the user experience (UX) initiatives undertaken by Black Urbanism Toronto (BUTO) to improve the urban experience for Black communities in Toronto. Founded in 2018, BUTO is dedicated to promoting community development and advancing the cultural, economic, and social interests of Black individuals.

Objective

The primary objective of this case study is to explore how BUTO's UX initiatives have positively impacted Black communities in Toronto. By analyzing the challenges faced by these communities and the UX solutions implemented by BUTO, we aim to highlight the organization's efforts in enhancing the urban experience for Black individuals.

Methodology

The case study employs a qualitative approach, involving interviews, surveys, and observation of BUTO's UX interventions. Data was collected from a diverse range of Black community members to understand their needs, preferences, and pain points related to urban living. The insights obtained were then utilized to inform the design and implementation of user-centered solutions.

Findings

The findings reveal that the construction of the Crosstown LRT negatively impacted the Little Jamaica neighborhood in Eglinton West, leading to resident and business displacement, as well as a decline in the local ecosystem. BUTO recognized the importance of addressing these challenges and embarked on UX initiatives to mitigate their effects.

User Experience Pathway to Solutions

Community Engagement Platform: BUTO developed an interactive online platform that serves as a hub for Black community members to connect, share resources, and voice their concerns. This platform fosters a sense of unity, encourages collaboration, and enables community-driven initiatives.
Accessibility and Inclusivity Enhancements: BUTO collaborated with local authorities and businesses to improve accessibility and inclusivity in public spaces. This involved advocating for wheelchair ramps, braille signage, and audio assistance systems to ensure that Black individuals with disabilities have equal access to urban amenities.
Cultural Preservation Initiatives: Recognizing the importance of preserving the cultural identity of Black communities, BUTO facilitated the establishment of cultural centers, art installations, and community events that celebrate Black heritage. These initiatives promote a sense of pride and belonging within the urban environment.

Impact

BUTO's UX initiatives have resulted in several positive outcomes. Black community members report feeling a greater sense of belonging and empowerment within their neighborhoods. The enhanced accessibility measures have made public spaces more inclusive, benefiting individuals with disabilities. The preservation of cultural identity has not only strengthened community bonds but also attracted visitors and investment, revitalizing the local economy.

Conclusion

This case study highlights the significant impact of BUTO's UX interventions in enhancing the urban experience for Black communities in Toronto. By prioritizing community engagement, accessibility, and cultural preservation, BUTO has successfully empowered Black individuals and revitalized neighborhoods affected by urban development. These initiatives serve as a model for promoting inclusivity and social equity in urban environments.
