Daily Do came to be as a solution to the influx of technology usage among children. Technology is a great tool and can be used in many wonderful ways to gain knowledge and create change. However, it can also have negative effects on its users. For this project, we focused on how technology usage impacts children, specifically between the ages of 5 and 8.
We began with secondary research, referencing case studies of children’s communication skills’ connection to technology usage, articles discussing technology in the classroom, parental techniques, etc. One of the key pieces of information we found was that excess technology usage can limit creativity and imaginative thought in children.
After gathering a substantial base knowledge of the topic, we proceeded to primary research. Parents and teachers were interviewed on their approaches to the relationship their children have with technology. After gathering both secondary and primary research, we decided the direction we would approach the issue from. Rather than imposing a strong standpoint on technology usage, we sought out a design solution that would simply bring attention to the plethora of ways that kids could fill their free time.
The Daily Do deck consists of a series of cards for children to pick that suggest activities such as ‘make finger puppets’ or ‘do a puzzle’ in hopes of bringing creativity and imaginative thought into the kids’ lives. The cards have colored borders around them indicating the level of parental guidance needed for each activity. For example, read a book and make finger puppets have an orange border around them, suggesting that parental help may be needed. A teal border indicates that activity could likely be done without help. Featured on the back of the cards are instructions to guide the user through the activities
