SUMMARY

I set about creating my first-ever sizzle video to highlight my editing and post-production skills. Along the way, I got serious about what, exactly, constitutes "good" video editing.

SITUATION

I wanted to capture the full scope of my experience in one short, easy-to-watch video. This video would be used as a portfolio centerpiece when submitting for work on freelance portals such as, Contra.

CHALLENGE

As I began to build my reel, I realized that content alone does not tell the full story. That's because the art of good editing is mostly transparent. That closeup of an actor emoting? The actor gets praised for that, not the editor who chose the take. That gorgeous establishing shot? Credit goes to the cinematographer, not the editor who sifted through several hours of b-roll to find it.
Honestly, that's the way it should be. If done right, editing is invisible - subsumed in the flow of the story and the message.
But how do you highlight something that should be invisible?

SOLUTION

As I thought more about video editing, I kept coming back to this idea of "flow." For me, flow is a combination of the sequencing of the moments that tell the story (what is shown vs. what is not) along with the rate at which those moments are delivered (pacing).
Flow is the thing a video editor controls more than any other factor. But the challenge with flow, at least in the context of an editing showreel, is that by definition you are only seeing short excerpts from each project. 5 seconds of this, 10 seconds of that. That's not long enough for an audience to understand and appreciate the flow that you created for those projects.
The answer, of course, is to get really creative and bold with the flow of the showreel itself. To make visible, if only for a minute and thirty seconds, the art of the invisible. The reel becomes the story. It's the journey that simultaneously showcases both the editor's experience and the editor's skill - skill at creating flow.
I had a lot of fun making this reel. I hope you enjoy it!
