This project explores the historical significance of the mines in Guanajuato, Mexico, which shaped the city’s unique urban development. Unlike other colonial cities, Guanajuato adapted to its rugged terrain with narrow streets, plazas, and tunnels. Mining, particularly silver from the Veta Madre, was key to the city's growth, leading to its UNESCO World Heritage designation in 1988.
The project focused on revitalizing the Rayas mine plaza, addressing issues like unsafe roadways and neglected public spaces. A new steel structure, inspired by mining architecture, was added for temporary events and sun protection, alongside improvements like tree planting, stone benches, and an elevator for better access.
