‘Inspirational’ and ‘Incredible’ NHS Nurse Turns to Writing

Laura Bennett, award-winning nurse at Nottingham University Hospital, publishes her story written for young patient William following the loss of his limbs.

Described as a ‘fantastic’ nurse by the NUH, Laura provided ‘outstanding patient care’ to little William during his stay at the same hospital. Having lost both legs and nine fingers to Sepsis, Laura wrote ‘William’s New Legs’ to help him understand what had happened to him.

‘William’s New Legs’ is beautifully told through delightful illustrations and amusing captions of William and his best bud Stinky Ted’s adventures. Follow William as he bravely fights off the ‘pesky beasts’ that nip his legs, and as he tries on new pairs until he settles on the perfect ones – you will have to read on to find out which ones!

Laura was featured alongside William and his family on BBC Breakfast in January 2021. Later that year, she went on to win the overall Public Award at the Team NUH Awards event which she accepted with praise for her colleagues in the Burns and Plastics team, stating ‘The award reflects on all of us, including the wider Children’s Hospital team.’ Her story was also covered by East Midlands Today and the Nottingham Post.

William’s family were also full of praise for the book, congratulating Laura on her win and speaking fondly of the book that their son William treasures. They describe Laura as a great comfort during the most difficult times of their lives.

‘William’s New Legs’ will be released on September 15th.
