Cat care during pregnancy

Caring for a pregnant cat involves several important steps to ensure both the mother and her kittens are healthy and comfortable.

Veterinary Care: Early in the pregnancy, take your cat to the vet for a check-up. Your vet can confirm the pregnancy, estimate the number of kittens, and check for any health issues. Follow-up visits may be necessary to monitor the cat's health.

Nutrition: Feed your pregnant cat high-quality, nutritious food. She may need more calories than usual, as well as increased levels of certain nutrients like protein, calcium, and phosphorus. Many vets recommend feeding a kitten formula because it's high in these essential nutrients.

Feeding Frequency: Pregnant cats often prefer eating smaller, more frequent meals as their pregnancy progresses and the growing kittens take up more space in the abdomen.

Comfortable Environment: Provide a quiet, comfortable area for your cat to rest. This space should be away from busy household areas and other pets. As the due date approaches, set up a nesting box in a private, warm, and safe location for her to give birth. The box should have low sides for easy access and be lined with soft, clean bedding.

Gentle Handling: Be gentle when handling a pregnant cat, especially as her belly grows. Avoid putting pressure on her abdomen.

Exercise: Allow your cat to exercise as normal, but avoid strenuous activities, especially in later stages of pregnancy.

Parasite Control: Discuss with your vet about safe flea, tick, and worm treatments during pregnancy. It's important to keep the mother free from parasites, but some treatments are not safe for pregnant cats.

Avoid Stress: Minimize stress by maintaining a calm, quiet environment. Sudden changes in the environment or routine can stress a pregnant cat.

Observation: Keep a close eye on your cat for signs of distress, illness, or labor complications. If you notice anything concerning (like prolonged labor, distress, or illness), contact your vet immediately.

Post-Birth Care: After the kittens are born, ensure the mother cat has a warm, undisturbed place to care for them. Monitor the kittens to make sure they are feeding and growing properly. The mother will need increased food and water during nursing.
