DRAKENSBERG — Premium E-commerce Website Design & Development
Short Description
Designed and developed a premium e-commerce website for DRAKENSBERG, a travel goods brand offering leather and canvas bags, weekender bags, backpacks, accessories, bundles, and gift-ready products.
DRAKENSBERG — Premium E-commerce Website Design & Development
Project Overview
DRAKENSBERG is a premium travel goods brand focused on timeless bags, leather and canvas craftsmanship, and products made for meaningful journeys.
The goal of this project was to design and develop a refined e-commerce experience that could present a large product catalog while still keeping the brand story emotional, trustworthy, and easy to explore.
The website needed to support product discovery, storytelling, category browsing, promotional sections, bundles, magazine content, and a smooth shopping journey across desktop and mobile.
I worked on the design and development of the site with a focus on premium visual presentation, clear navigation, scalable e-commerce structure, and a shopping experience that matches the brand’s adventurous yet timeless identity.
The Challenge
DRAKENSBERG has a broad product range, including travel bags, weekenders, backpacks, handbags, toiletry bags, accessories, bundles, and gift products.
The main challenge was to organize this catalog in a way that feels simple for customers while still allowing the brand to communicate quality, craftsmanship, lifestyle, and emotional value.
The site needed to feel more than just a product store. It needed to feel like a travel-inspired brand world where customers could discover products, understand the story behind them, and feel confident purchasing.
My Role
I contributed to the full website design and development process, including:
E-commerce website design
Homepage design
Collection page structure
Product listing layout
Navigation and menu structure
Responsive layout development
Product section design
Bundle and promotional section planning
Brand storytelling sections
Magazine/content layout
Mobile shopping UX
Front-end implementation
Visual hierarchy and spacing
Conversion-focused e-commerce UX
Design Direction
The visual direction was built around the feeling of timeless travel, durable materials, and handcrafted quality.
The design uses a clean, premium layout system that allows product photography, brand storytelling, and shopping actions to work together. The interface avoids unnecessary decoration and instead focuses on strong imagery, clear product categories, readable typography, and structured product presentation.
The design direction focuses on:
Premium travel lifestyle
Leather and canvas material quality
Clear product discovery
Large product imagery
Warm and trustworthy brand storytelling
Simple category navigation
Editorial content sections
Mobile-friendly browsing
Clean e-commerce structure
Conversion-focused product presentation
The result is a site that feels practical, premium, and brand-driven at the same time.
Homepage Strategy
The homepage was designed as both a brand introduction and a sales entry point.
It introduces the DRAKENSBERG world through strong travel-focused messaging, hero visuals, featured product sections, bestseller products, bundles, brand story content, customer trust signals, and magazine-style storytelling.
Key homepage elements include:
Hero section with brand message
Product category entry points
Bestseller product carousel
Travel bag bundle promotion
Brand story section
Customer trust section
Featured backpack section
Magazine/news section
Footer navigation
Payment and support information
This structure helps users quickly understand the brand, explore popular products, and move naturally into shopping.
Navigation & Catalog Structure
Because the store includes many product types, the navigation system was designed to make browsing clear and intuitive.
The menu structure separates products by gender, category, new arrivals, sale items, and brand content. This allows users to shop by product type, gift intent, lifestyle need, or brand story.
Key navigation areas include:
Women’s products
Men’s products
Travel bags
Backpacks
Handbags
Weekenders
Accessories
Bundles
Gift ideas
New arrivals
Sale
Brand story
Magazine
Manufacturing and care information
This structure supports both quick shopping and deeper brand exploration.
Product Discovery UX
The product browsing experience was designed to help users compare products quickly.
Product cards clearly show product imagery, product name, price, color options, and product status labels such as new or available soon. This makes the catalog easy to scan while keeping the presentation clean and premium.
The goal was to help customers find the right product without feeling overwhelmed by the catalog.
Brand Storytelling
A major part of the site experience is brand storytelling.
The website connects products with travel, memories, craftsmanship, and long-lasting quality. Instead of presenting bags as simple accessories, the site positions them as travel companions connected to meaningful journeys.
Storytelling sections were used to communicate:
The value of travel
The emotional role of each product
Handmade production
Material quality
Sustainability and responsibility
Timeless style
Direct-to-consumer value
The brand’s world and philosophy
This helps the site feel more premium and emotionally connected than a standard e-commerce store.
E-commerce Development Focus
The development approach focused on creating a scalable e-commerce structure that could support ongoing product updates, new collections, promotional campaigns, and content publishing.
The site was structured with reusable sections and flexible layouts so the brand could manage product categories, featured items, banners, story blocks, bundle promotions, and editorial content over time.
Development focus areas included:
Responsive front-end implementation
Reusable e-commerce sections
Product card components
Collection layout structure
Navigation and mega-menu logic
Homepage content sections
Promotional banner sections
Bundle promotion layout
Magazine/content sections
Mobile layout optimization
Footer and support structure
Payment and trust-section presentation
Clean UI behavior across devices
The result is a store structure that can grow with the brand while keeping the shopping experience consistent.
Mobile Experience
The website was designed and developed with mobile shopping in mind.
Since many customers browse products from mobile devices, the layout needed to keep navigation, product discovery, category browsing, and calls-to-action clear on smaller screens.
The magazine section gives the brand space to publish stories, lifestyle content, product education, travel inspiration, and long-form editorial content.
This helps the website feel like a brand platform, not only a product catalog.
UX Strategy
The UX strategy was based on a simple goal:
Make the store feel premium, but keep the shopping journey easy.
To achieve this, I balanced emotional brand storytelling with practical e-commerce UX. The homepage creates desire and trust. The navigation helps users find categories quickly. Product sections make items easy to compare. Story sections explain the brand’s value. Magazine content supports deeper engagement.
The final experience supports both fast shoppers and customers who want to understand the brand before buying.
Design + Development Strategy
The design and development strategy focused on building a flexible premium store system.
This makes the site practical for business operations while still maintaining a strong visual identity.
