Making patient care more accessible

Overview

Wanda is a B2B2C healthtech startup providing a predictive remote patient monitoring solution to reduce hospital readmissions.
The company had a patient app that could only be used on Android tablets that they provided to patients via clinics. They wanted to develop a BYOB patient app that patients could download to their own devices and use to check in with their nurses.
I joined the company as a Senior Product Designer to redesign their patient app to make it compatible with all handheld devices and operating systems.

Challenge

The challenge was to create a high-quality product design that could be launched as quickly as possible while taking into account the limited engineering resources available to build and maintain the app.
The design also needed to be very simple so that older adults, the target users, would use it to check in with their nurses.

My Approach

I needed an efficient approach to allow us to get more done with fewer resources. So, my approach was to achieve two goals at once, regardless of the use cases.
I suggested a unified mobile design for both iOS and Android so patients and nurses wouldn't have to relearn when switching devices. This reduced complexity for users and devs.
I also proposed the same interface for phones and tablets to avoid duplicating work. We could always customize the tablet view later if needed.
To get started, I conducted the following research:
Best practices from iOS and Android design systems
Other apps that used the same mobile design regardless of the OS
How other companies connect their biometric Bluetooth devices
Interviews with potential users
Based on my research, I designed a flexible and scalable design system. I worked closely with developers to design and refine Bluetooth connection flows that were as simple and smooth as possible. I tested with internal users to make sure that they could connect and use the biometric Bluetooth devices on the first try. The streamlined design saved major time and effort compared to device-specific versions.

Results

As a result, my approach helped the company maximize productivity with constrained resources while still meeting user needs.
Patients could access the app immediately instead of waiting for us to ship tablets
Both patients and nurses found the new app much more enjoyable to use
The company reduced costs by avoiding supplying tablets to everyone
