The Black students at Portland State University formed the Black Student Union (BSU) over 50 years ago. Dennis G. Payne was a pioneer who spearheaded the movement. The Black Student Union played an essential role in introducing Black Studies to the University and expressing the importance of Black history and education.
My Experience as Social Media Manager
I joined Black Student Union in the Fall of 2019, and I was announced as social media manager shortly after until the Spring of 2021.
Some of my duties included:
Brainstorming content ideas.
Sharing content ideas with the team.
Listening and applying other members' content ideas.
Scheduling social media posts.
Reviewing analytics.
Aligning content with calendar events and holidays.
Digital and in-person community outreach and engagement.
Virtual and in-person event planning and promoting.
Being in a leadership position for such an important organization while existing as a college student boosted my confidence, skills, and faith. We faced various systemic adversities as an organization, and we overcame them.
Outcome
Black Student Union's membership increased by 50% compared to 2017-2018. We organized over ten events with the help of social media marketing and digital engagement. The Black Student Union and Pan African Commons collaborated for a massive event during Black History Month. We were proud to continue the legacy of Black Graduation as well.
