Taking a Challenger Telecom Brand to #1 in Brand Sentiment in a Hyper-Competitive Market
The Challenge
Virgin Mobile UAE is a fully digital mobile service provider operating in one of the most competitive telecom markets in the world. The UAE telecom landscape is dominated by two state-backed giants with massive marketing budgets and entrenched brand loyalty. For a challenger brand, standing out isn't just a creative problem; it's a strategic one.
I was recruited to join the core marketing team with a mandate to drive brand growth, elevate brand perception, and lead key GTM initiatives across the full marketing mix. The challenge was to make Virgin Mobile punch above its weight and make the brand mean something in a market where differentiation is genuinely hard.
What I Did
My remit was broad and required me to work across strategy, execution, and cross-functional leadership simultaneously.
On brand strategy, I developed and executed a messaging framework that gave Virgin Mobile a distinctive, consistent identity in the market, one that the competition couldn't easily replicate. This was the foundation for everything that followed.
I led the go-to-market strategy for major product launches, including the Virgin Mobile Youth Plan, managing the end-to-end process from positioning to campaign execution.
For social and content, I directed a marketing agency in the development and execution of a content strategy and influencer marketing campaigns. The work was designed not just for reach but for resonance, building genuine affinity with the audiences that mattered.
I also spearheaded a cross-functional project to improve the customer experience, coordinating across teams to address the pain points that were dragging the Net Promoter Score down.
Beyond this, I led co-marketing partnerships with major regional brands, including Anghami and The ENTERTAINER, and I localised Virgin's iconic global tone of voice guidelines to fit the cultural nuances of the UAE market, a genuinely delicate piece of work for an iconic brand.
The Result
The brand strategy work led to Virgin Mobile UAE being ranked #1 in positive brand sentiment among all telecom competitors in the country. The content and influencer campaigns drove a 129% year-over-year increase in social media engagement, a 2,600% increase in reach, and over 500,000 impressions from influencer activity alone. The customer experience initiative delivered a 7.18% year-over-year improvement in the Net Promoter Score.
