Plucked

Plucked is a dynamic social trivia game platform where users interact through playful cultural challenges and win cash prizes. Designed to blend transparency, competition, and community engagement, the game uses daily questions to provoke creative responses from users, who then compete to earn rankings and rewards.
This MVP was created to test how Nigerian youth would engage with a competitive, community-driven Q&A format inspired by Twitter threads and TikTok Live interactions.
Plucked is not just a game; it's a modern village square where culture, wit, and social interaction collide. The MVP sets a foundation for social gaming in Nigeria and beyond—with localized flavor and competitive edge.

Process

Problem

Digital trivia and challenge-based games in Africa lack social transparency and meaningful engagement. Most focus on fixed-question formats and leaderboard systems without real-time interaction, user-set rules, or incentive-based competitions driven by players.
Plucked solves this by:
Letting players compete against themselves and others for cash and clout.
Creating a social feed where players can view, comment, and rate entries.
Hosting free and paid games with unique formats and question types.

Goals (MVP)

Create a system where the system Pluck (creator) decides game for Plucker (participant).
Enable transparent commenting and interaction under games.
Allow a monetization structure through monthly subscriptions and in-game payments.
Include tournaments, leaderboard systems, and user profiles.

My Role

As the Lead Product Designer and solo Narrative Architect (UX Writer), I was responsible for transforming the client's raw concept into a usable, engaging MVP experience. My responsibilities included:
Conducting a UX audit of competitive social gaming platforms.
Translating game mechanics into user flows and wireframes.
Designing high-fidelity UI mockups and visual storytelling elements.
Ensuring transparency and social interaction were built into the user interface.
Defining user flows for both creators and players.
Designing 60+ screens and modals across all user roles.
Creating a lightweight design system for future scaling.
Prototyping, testing, and iterating based on user feedback.
Collaborating with the founder to define monetization strategies and interaction logic.

Design Process

Discovery: Conducted product workshops with the founder to clarify the dual-user system (Pluck vs Plucker).
User Flow Mapping: Developed simplified game flows to accommodate both paid and free gameplay.
Wireframing: Sketched out core flows including game creation, joining, leaderboard, and tournaments.
UI Design: Created 40+ high-fidelity screens and modals using a vibrant, competitive visual style.
Validation: Ran informal user testing sessions; refined flow friction points especially around game joining and commenting.

Challenge

No existing references: There was no exact product to benchmark; the closest inspirations were Twitter, TikTok Live, and Kahoot, so I had to invent interactions from scratch.
Balancing complexity and fun: Creating a social interaction layer (comments, likes) without overwhelming users required thoughtful hierarchy and copy.
Transparency vs Privacy: Ensuring fairness while keeping all responses public demanded clarity in the UX language and feedback loops.

Outcome

Delivered a complete MVP design ready for development handoff.
Design validated with real users; high interest in the cultural gameplay model.
Built a reusable system that can scale across mobile and web.

Insight

Culture drives engagement: Users responded better to culturally grounded questions than generic ones.
Transparency boosts trust: Public answers and visible stakes increased credibility.
Dual-role architecture retains users: Letting users both create and play games added a strong loop of engagement.
