Project Overview

A short-form reflective documentary exploring how editing choices reshape meaning. Built from existing personal footage and archival material, the piece uses visual metaphor, pacing, and absence to transform a fragmented collection of moments into a coherent narrative about constraint, observation, and becoming.
The project was created under tight time and resource limitations, requiring the story to emerge through selection, sequencing, and subtraction rather than additional production.

Objectives

Explore how editing functions as a narrative and ethical act, not just a technical one.
Transform disparate, non-narrative footage into a cohesive story with emotional clarity.
Communicate internal experience through visual symbolism rather than exposition or dialogue.
Demonstrate intentional narrative shaping under creative constraints.

Role & Responsibilities

Sole creator
Concept development and narrative framing
Footage review, selection, and sequencing
Editorial decision-making (pacing, rhythm, omission, emphasis)
Thematic alignment between visuals, sound, and meaning
Final edit and delivery

Outcome

Produced a complete short-form documentary piece that communicates a clear narrative arc through editing alone. Successfully reframed personal archival footage into a universally legible story. Recognized by peers as a strong example of narrative and editorial craft. Selected for use as a portfolio piece demonstrating storytelling, judgment, and systems-level thinking.

Video Edit Decision Log (5 Key Decisions)

Cutting the beginning of the interview: I removed the original opening audio that explained the assignment. It was run-on, and I felt it didn't set the right mood for the video. Instead, I used text to grab the viewer's attention while leaving silence in the background to prevent distractions.
Adding music: The addition of music was a deliberate choice to support the tone of the interview. Since my voice didn't always carry the emotional weight I intended, the music helped enhance the mood and carry the narrative.
Using imagery to reinforce the narrative: I incorporated imagery that connected with specific segments of the audio. For example, when I discussed studying ecology or biology, I included shots of a cat, a deer, or a rabbit. When I spoke about burnout, I included the image of my bloody nose in my nursing uniform.
Timing and pacing of music with voice: I deliberately paused my speaking at certain moments to let the music take the lead. When the music reached an emotional high point, it would temporarily overshadow my voice, emphasizing key moments of reflection.
Minimal use of text: I limited text to the beginning and end of the video. This decision kept the focus on my voice and the imagery, ensuring the audience was fully immersed in the story.
