Butter: Personality-First Dating App Concept

Butter is a concept dating app built around one idea: what if matching was based on who someone actually is, not just what they look like?
Most dating apps lead with photos and reduce people to a swipe. Butter flips that. It uses personality assessments and voice prompts to create matches, so users connect over compatibility before they ever see a face. The name says it: smooth, warm, easy.
This is a spec project. I designed the full UI/UX from scratch after studying dating apps on the App Store and identifying where the experience consistently breaks down.

Research

I spent time inside Hinge, Bumble, Tinder, and several smaller personality-focused apps. The pattern was the same everywhere: photo-first, personality-second (if at all). The apps that tried personality matching buried it behind long questionnaires that felt like homework. Users would skip them entirely.
The insight: personality matching only works if the input method is enjoyable, not clinical. Voice prompts solve this. They're personal, they reveal tone and energy, and they take 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes.

The Matching Model

Butter's matching system works in layers:
Personality assessment — a short, visual quiz that maps users across key compatibility dimensions. It's designed to feel like a game, not a psych evaluation.
Voice prompts — users record short audio responses to fun, specific questions. These become the primary content on their profile, replacing the wall-of-selfies approach.
Compatibility score — matches are surfaced based on personality alignment, with voice prompts as the first thing you hear from a potential match.

Voice Prompts

This is the core interaction. Instead of writing a bio nobody reads, users answer prompts like "What's your idea of a perfect lazy Sunday?" or "Tell me about the last thing that made you laugh until you cried." The recordings are short (15–30 seconds) and show up directly in the match feed.
The UI keeps the voice player front and center. A waveform visualization gives the interaction a tactile, intimate feel. Users can listen before deciding to connect, which creates a more intentional experience than rapid-fire swiping.

The Match Experience

When two users match, the reveal is designed to feel like a moment. The "You Matched" screen uses warm colors and playful typography to make the connection feel celebratory rather than transactional. From there, the conversation starts with context: both users can see each other's voice prompts and personality highlights, giving them something real to talk about from the first message.

Visual Design

The brand identity uses warm, buttery tones (soft yellows, creams, and warm neutrals) against clean white space. The typography is rounded and friendly without being childish. Every screen is designed to feel inviting and low-pressure, because dating apps shouldn't feel like a job interview.
Illustrations from Icons8 are used sparingly to add personality to empty states and onboarding. Photography from Unsplash provides lifestyle context. The overall aesthetic sits somewhere between cozy and modern: approachable enough to feel safe, polished enough to feel premium.

Outcome

Butter demonstrates how dating apps can prioritize genuine compatibility without sacrificing the speed and simplicity users expect. By leading with voice and personality instead of photos, the concept creates space for more meaningful connections while keeping the experience fun and frictionless. The full design was built in Figma with a scalable component system ready for development.
