▪︎Harvest Martini▪︎
I spent a few days at my sister's house in order to help prepare her garden for chillier temperatures. I loved being near all the herbs and vegetables; I was basically in a meditative state as I harvested. I hope I can have a home with a garden like hers one day ...but it definitely won't be as big--the plants are fun, the weeds are not, lol.
My favorite part of her garden is the nastirtium. I asked her to grow them for me last year because I had so many cocktail recipes that required nastirtium, but couldn't find them anywhere in the city! I have been drinking gin martini's all summer, and I was inspired to make myself a harvest martini for fall with all the pieces of the nastirtium plant.
My sister taught me that pickled nastirtium seeds are referred to as 'poor man's capers.' They reminded me of the saltiness that an olive adds to a martini, and I usually like my martini's dirty, so I tossed a splash of pickled nasturtium seed juice into my mixing glass. I used @malfygin_us con limone as I figured the lemon would perfectly complement the peppery taste of the nastirtium.
-2oz Malfy Gin con Limone
-1/2 oz dry vermouth
-lemon peel
-pickled nastirtium seeds
-5 nastirtium leaves
(10 if the leaves are small)
-3 nastirtium flowers
(two for muddling and one for garnish)
Add the gin and vermouth to a mixing glass. Add the leaves, seeds, and 2 of the flowers, then muddle. Add ice (and a splash of pickled nastirtium seeds juice if you like your martini dirty, like me). Stir the mixture until chilled. Strain into a chilled glass, then run the lemon peel around the edge of the glass and discard. Garnish with 3 pickled nastirtium seeds and a flower.
