"Big up, Shashamanee!"
In early 2021, I met Alpha D, a musician and reggae singer through a mutual acquaintance. The first contact went really well, and after a few hours talking, we agreed on working together! 🤝
He needed a music video for his song Shashamanee with The Soul Band. Quoting his own description, "it was composed for the "International Shashamanee Cyber Festival" as a reaction to the ethnic violences that happened in Shashamanee early 2020."
Alpha D had filmed multiple videos of his recording sessions with The Soul band and decided to use all this footage to create the music video. Everyone had to be visible, have enough screen time and for the video to feel/be authentic!
Thankfully, I already had an idea of how this could be achieved:
With film strip-like cutouts! 🎞️
With this solution, I was able to show multiple artists/musicians at the same time! They appear in tandem with the music when their instrument is more so at the forefront of the song:
It also served as a cue for me to introduce the accompanying singer 👩🏽🎤:
For the colour correction and grading, I decided to emphasize the colours of the Ethiopian flag with an overall 2-strip colour feel! 🟢🔴
